Description
An idler gear is a component placed between two other gears (the drive gear and the driven gear) in a gear train. Its main function is not to change the speed ratio but to transfer motion between shafts that are far apart, and/or to change the direction of rotation.
In a dental handpiece, the gears are incredibly small and are constantly subject to high stress, friction, and heat from sterilization. The "Set of 3" refers to the specific number of idler gears required for a complete replacement in a particular model of handpiece head or motor.
