Wave Washer Function

Wave washers, also called wave springs, are characterized by their wavy or scalloped profile. Their primary function is to provide a compensating spring force in assemblies with limited axial space.

  • Shock Absorption and Cushioning: When installed, the waves flatten out under axial load, storing energy and acting as a cushion or shock absorber.

  • Tensioning: They help prevent assemblies from disintegrating due to vibration or movement by maintaining a constant tension (preload) between components.

  • Tolerance Compensation: They take up play or slack in an assembly, compensating for tolerance variations, minor misalignments, and thermal expansion/contraction.

  • Lower Spring Rate: Compared to flatter spring washers (like Belleville washers), wave washers generally provide a lower spring force over a longer deflection
